And if you’re feeling adventurous, we were fortunate enough to have an exceptional bartender who went above and beyond to whip up some off-menu creations. One standout was a coquito, a traditional Puerto Rican holiday drink made with cashew, pumpkin, and coconut, reminiscent of eggnog. It was so delicious, it should definitely be added to the permanent menu.

With its exceptional food pairings and a variety of exciting events on the calendar, Port of Call stands out as a must-visit destination. Here’s an overview of what you can expect from this one-of-a-kind dining experience:

Charting the Course

The story behind Port of Call begins with a vision to bring the spirit of international ports to the heart of Mystic. From its nautical decor to its globally inspired dishes, every aspect of this restaurant is designed to evoke a sense of adventure. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick drink or settling in for a multi-course meal, each visit feels like embarking on a new journey.

One of the standout features of Port of Call is the meticulously designed interior, which brings the maritime world to life. The bar top, for instance, is made from the exterior hull planking of the Charles W. Morgan, a historic whaling ship preserved at the Mystic Seaport Museum. This iconic piece of the restaurant’s decor not only adds authenticity to the setting but also connects diners to Mystic’s deep maritime roots.

In addition to its stunning atmosphere, Port of Call pays tribute to history through its drink offerings. They proudly serve The Real McCoy rum, a brand inspired by the remarkable story of Bill McCoy, a high-quality rum runner during Prohibition. To evade the legal restrictions of the U.S. government, McCoy lived in international waters, making his rum one of the finest and most sought-after during that time. This fascinating backstory is embedded in the essence of Port of Call, with the rum featured in their expertly crafted cocktails. For those interested in learning more, links to documentaries about McCoy and the Charles W. Morgan are available, allowing guests to explore the rich history behind these unique details.

With its seamless blend of history, maritime charm, and modern creativity, Port of Call offers a dining experience that transports guests to faraway places while celebrating the local heritage of Mystic. Each element—from the bar’s historic wood to the storied rum—makes this a truly immersive journey, bringing the world’s ports right to your table.

Taste the World

The menu at Port of Call is an essential part of that journey, with each dish and drink inspired by a specific port city from around the world. Every item has been thoughtfully crafted to reflect the flavors, traditions, and culinary influences of its namesake port.

The flavor profile chart is an incredibly helpful guide, with each cocktail numbered to clearly highlight its dominant flavor characteristics, making it easy to navigate and choose based on your preferences.

Take, for example, the Bayside Boil, with a port of call of Providence, Rhode Island. This innovative drink is inspired by the flavors of a classic clam boil, with butter washed aguardiente, corn liquor, Narragansett bay leaf syrup, lemon, Worcestershire sauce, and a touch of Old Bay. It’s a coastal-inspired cocktail that captures the essence of Rhode Island’s maritime history, offering a rich and complex flavor profile similar to that of a Bloody Mary.

For a more rustic experience, try the Ham & Warm Crusty Bread, with a port of call of Palermo, Italy. This dish features dry-cured prosciutto, smooth cultured butter, and a drizzle of truffle oil – all served alongside grilled sourdough. It’s a celebration of simple yet luxurious flavors, reminiscent of the charming trattorias in Palermo, where every bite feels like a comforting taste of Sicily’s culinary heritage.

We ranked The Port of Call a 7.3 on Beli Eats. While the main courses didn’t fully win us over, the creativity and quality of the small plates and appetizers more than made up for it. The menu at Port of Call is a celebration of bold flavors, and it’s clear that a lot of thought went into crafting each dish. The small plates, in particular, shine with their inventive takes on global cuisine—each one offering a unique twist that excites the palate. From the fresh, local collaborations with nearby artisans to the innovative preparations that transport you to different parts of the world, these appetizers truly steal the spotlight.

What really elevates the experience is the excellent service, which is attentive without being overbearing, making every guest feel right at home. Paired with the expertly crafted cocktails, which are as much a work of art as they are a drink, the overall experience becomes something truly memorable.

The drink menu and happy hour are, without a doubt, the standout features of Port of Call. The creativity and variety on offer make every visit feel like a new discovery, and I can’t wait to eventually work my way through the entire menu. That being said, Port of Call truly shines as a small plate and cocktail lounge, offering an experience that’s more about savoring bold flavors and inventive drinks than a traditional dinner outing.

Food of CT
Truly such a unique spot full of history and international influences- I’ve never been anywhere like The Port of Call! We were seated at the “Million Mile Bar” made of refurbished wood from the historic Charles W. Morgan whaleship, and sipped on some really creative cocktails. One of my favorite parts about my experience was the menu, which described the port of call each small plate and cocktail were influenced by. I also really appreciated how each cocktail listed its ideal food pairing. Downstairs is the “Dive Bar”, which I only peeked into quickly, but it had a laid back vibe compared to the sophisticated bar upstairs. The food we had was excellent, but you should definitely be aware that these are served as small plates and not full meals. I would love to come back again on my next Mystic trip!

Port of Call has become a Mystic staple, and for great reason! They have the MOST beautiful bar, and very friendly bartenders and staff. Their menu is super cool with options for everyone including unique drinks, snacks, and bites. Be sure to make a reservation, as it can get really busy (we have been turned away at the door before, so plan ahead!). We will be visiting again soon, and often!

Stephanie and Austin were very welcoming when we visited here! They were so knowledgeable and definitely enjoyed learning the history of the bar with some very eclectic tasty drinks! It sounds like that they will be doing a lot of fun daily specials and we certainly will like to come back with our kids to try some of their food!! It all sounds incredible!! We really enjoyed the atmosphere here and may be one of our newest favorite spots!
